When the Spa Town Got Electricity
Bad Gastein began producing electricity as early as 1886 and became Europe’s first electrically lit spa town. When the picture was taken around 1900, the town was therefore already an early example of how Alpine power could drive modernity – long before the power station by the waterfall, inaugurated in 1914.

The story behind the motif

The famous waterfall in Bad Gastein, Austria in 1900. At this time, Bad Gastein was not a ski resort and the first lifts only opened in 1947.

Bad Gastein is a famous health resort because of the hot thermal water found in various springs around the resort. Already in the 13th century, people started bathing in these healing springs and even today people enjoy a warm thermal bath after a long day on the ski slope.
