A Cat Across the Channel
When aviation pioneer John Moisant became the first pilot to fly with passengers across the English Channel in 1910, he had more than mechanic Albert Fileux with him. Mademoiselle Fifi also travelled in the Blériot aircraft. The cat thus took part in an aviation feat long before the age of scheduled flights.

The story behind the motif

American aviation pioneer John Bevins Moisant and his faithful co-pilot, the cat Mademoiselle Fifi.

John B. Moisant was a very daring pilot, businessman and revolutionary. He was known as "the King of Aviators" and never flew without his cat. Fifi was always by his side, even when he performed advanced aerial maneuvers over cities or raced his Blériot monoplane around the Statue of Liberty. He therefore also went by the nickname Captain Kitty .

A famous quote by John is: "Nine-tenths confidence and one-tenth common sense equals a successful aviator."
