The Nationalmuseum bought the painting as early as 1899, just two years after it was painted. For Gustaf Ankarcrona, it was an early recognition of his national romantic painting; he would later become a central figure in efforts to preserve the cultural heritage of Dalarna.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Fordomtima painted by Gustaf Ankarcrona in 1897. The motif shows two Viking ships gliding across the calm water on an early evening in Sweden. Fordomtima is an older Swedish word and means Formerly . Gustaf Ankarcrona was a Swedish artist also known for his involvement in early homestead care, especially that in Dalarna.
