The Teacher Behind Alma-Tadema
Henri Leys taught the young Lawrence Alma-Tadema in Antwerp from 1852 to 1857, before his pupil became famous for his meticulous scenes from antiquity. This painting is a reminder that Leys himself moved between more everyday subjects and the history painting that made him a major name in Belgium.
