The story behind the motif
Poster with a beautiful painting of a winter landscape at the Royal Djurgården in Stockholm painted by King Karl XV of Sweden (1826–1872).
Karl XV was king of Sweden and Norway between 1859 and 1872. He married Princess Lovisa of the Netherlands. Karl XV loved to paint and devoted a large part of his life to painting in the romantic style of the time and played a major role for art in Sweden through the strong support he gave to many artists.
The Royal Djurgården is an island in central Stockholm that is part of the Royal National City Park and is covered by royal disposition rights. In the time of Karl XI in 1680, a fence was erected around the entire Djurgården and its popular hunting grounds to keep deer and roe deer in and predators such as bears and wolves out.
