The story behind the motif
A beautiful drawing with the heraldic coat of arms for the province of Värmland from the 19th century.
Värmland's regional coat of arms portrays a black eagle on a golden background. The eagle is a classic heraldic symbol often associated with strength, majesty and high status. Värmland was represented in the procession at Gustav Vasa's funeral in 1560 by a black wolverine in a silver field. However, the wolf was often confused with the beaver on Medelpad's regional coat of arms at the time, and on the initiative of Erik XIV, the coat of arms was changed in 1567 to an eagle. From the end of the 17th century, the eagle was made black as in this picture. When established in 1936, the eagle received its current blue color and the field became silver.
Värmland, located in western Sweden, borders Norway and is known for its rich nature with deep forests, rivers and large lakes, including Vänern, Sweden's largest lake. Historically, Värmland has had a strong connection to agriculture and forestry as well as iron production, which has been of great economic importance for the region.
Cities such as Karlstad, which is the largest city in Värmland, have played a central role in the cultural and economic life of the region.
The text above the coat of arms reads: "Arms of Vermland". At the bottom left it says: "Sweden's National and Country Coat of Arms. Established by the Royal Majesty. After drawings by Prof. M. AD. Hildebrandt in Berlin. Published by Carl Arvid Klingspor."
