The story behind the motif
A beautiful drawing with the heraldic coat of arms for the province of Västerbotten from the 19th century. The coat of arms depicts a reindeer and was presented at Gustav Vasa's funeral in 1560. In the 1590s, the stars were added.
The regional coat of arms of Västerbotten is included together with the regional coat of arms of Lapland in the coat of arms of Norrbotten County and together with the regional coat of arms of Lapland and Ångermanland in the coat of arms of Västerbotten County.
Västerbotten is known for its extensive forestry, rich natural resources and significant role in the Swedish iron and mining industry. Historically, Västerbotten has had great strategic importance, especially during the colonization of northern Sweden. Västerbotten also has deep Sami roots and a strong tradition of folk culture, including music and crafts.
The text above the coat of arms reads: Coat of Arms of Västerbotten. At the bottom left it says: "Sweden's National and Country Coat of Arms. Established by the Royal Majesty. After drawings by Prof. M. AD. Hildebrandt in Berlin. Published by Carl Arvid Klingspor."
