The story behind the motif
Sweden's first "chauffeuse" at the steering wheel of an Oldsmobil on Södermalm in Stockholm in 1904. Alexandra Gjestvang had scaled Besvärsbacken, one of the most difficult slopes in Sweden, and then driven down it - an equally difficult test.
Besvärsbacken was used at the beginning of the 20th century as a place for test driving cars and for performing brake tests. Besvärsbacken is still today the steepest gradient on Stockholm's streets with its 22%. In the picture we see many people who have gathered to see Alexandra become a pioneer as the first female driver in Sweden.
