The story behind the motif
Discover the legendary Swedish Power Equilibrists ("Svenska Kraftekvilibrister"), formed in 1895 by weightlifter Arvid Andersson and gymnast Axel Rylander.
Among the era's iconic strongmen, "Starke Arvid" stood out as a titan of strength, depicted on the left in this captivating image. Arvid and Axel captivated global audiences with their astonishing feats, lifting orchestras, horses, and cars, tearing through ropes, bending iron, driving nails through boards, escaping cages, and even wrestling bears. One of Arvid's most spellbinding acts involved balancing a platform, complete with a piano and pianist, on his forehead.
In a historic 1900 showdown in New York, Arvid triumphed over the Russian-American strongman Rolandow, claiming the title of the world's strongest man despite the odds.
At the turn of the 19th century, strongmen were celebrated as sports heroes and national ambassadors, captivating the public's imagination into the mid-20th century.
