The story behind the motif
The light shines through the stairwell of Stockholm City Hall and creates beautiful contrasts. This photograph was taken shortly after the building's dedication in the 1920s. The city hall was inaugurated in 1923 on the 400th anniversary of Gustav Vasa's entry into Stockholm. It had taken 15 years to build and was the masterpiece of renowned architect Ragnar Östberg. The building is seen by many as a symbol of Sweden and its capital and has become internationally known, not least because of the annual Nobel celebrations.
