The story behind the motif
Brother Saint Martin and the Three Goblins is a famous painting by John Bauer. The picture was first published together with a fairy tale in Among Elves and Goblins in 1913 . The story is about the monk Sankt Martin who has gone from Sigtuna to Bergslagen to tell about the god he believes in. But the people there would not listen. On the way home, he got lost in the forest and met goblins, fairies and other beings in the deep, dark forest. In the picture we see him wearing his hood holding up a hand against three trolls.

John Bauer is known for his fairy tale motifs with trolls and princesses and he has had a great influence on Swedish folklore and storytelling.
