The story behind the motif

Poster featuring the coat of arms of Södermanland, taken from a historical illustration from the 17th century.

The motif shows Södermanland’s heraldic symbol in the form of a griffin with an eagle’s head, outspread wings, and a lion’s body. Above the griffin hovers an open crown, and at the very bottom of the image appears the Latin title “Insigne Ducatus Sudermannia”.

The griffin is depicted in a powerful and upright pose, giving the motif a solemn and monumental expression. The composition highlights the province’s classic armorial image and connects to the older Swedish pictorial tradition surrounding provincial and ducal coats of arms.
