The story behind the motif
Poster with an old painting of Södermalm from 1873. In the picture we see a view from the White Mountains in the direction of Katarina church.
The first settlement on Södermalm was at Slussen, where the district has spread out in different directions along Götgatan, Hornsgatan and Tjärhovsgatan. By the 1880s, the settlement had reached down to Skånegatan and Ringvägen in the west. At the turn of the century and industrialization, the district was primarily home to the working class.
