The story behind the motif
Poster with a beautiful painting from 1841 by the artist Ferdinand Tollin (1807-1860). Tollin was a Swedish inventor, engineer, draughtsman, graphic artist, painter, writer and Stockholm portrayer.
Tollin's detailed painting of Riddarhustorget depicts the feeling of a populated square at the time in an everyday atmosphere. Riddarhustorget is located in Old Town, Stockholm. It is a heavily trafficked place in the Myntgatan extension south of Riddarhuspalatset.
In the painting we also see the Bondeska palace, which is a palace built in 1662–1673 as a private residence for the national treasurer Gustaf Bonde. The Bondeska Palace was Stockholm's town hall from 1731–1915, and is today the seat of the Supreme Court.
