The story behind the motif
Poster with map of old Riddarfjärden in Stockholm in 1928.
In 1928, Riddarfjärden, a bay in central Stockholm and part of Mälaren, was a lively place that played a central role in the city's economy. Port activity was significant, with boats and ships transporting goods and passengers to and from the city. Around the bay stood impressive buildings such as the Royal Palace and the Riddarhuset. Bridges over the water connected different parts of the city. Riddarfjärden was then as now a central part of Stockholm's history and identity.
