The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph of Gerda Nilsson (1883 - 1964), standing with the oars on board her rowing boat, Flatholmen in 1953. At this time, Flatholmen had a permanent population of about 130 people, where everyone lived from fishing and shipping.

The fisherman's wife Gerda Nilsson was married to the fisherman Oskar Nilsson (1875 - 1936) and the family lived on Flatholmen outside Tjörn in Bohuslän and raised five children. Gerda became a widow when she was 53 years old. She was known as a talented and hard-working woman, who was also very friendly and nice.

As a widow, she supported herself mainly by taking the mail out to Flatholmen and then delivering it there. She also had a small post office at home. The snip in which she is standing in the photo was the boat she rowed into Stockevik on Tjörn to collect the mail. She did this tour three to four times a week. In rough weather, she had her neighbor, an unmarried woman, row with her. Gerda never canceled.
