The story behind the motif
Poster featuring the painting Midsummer's Day by the iconic artist John Bauer from 1901. The painting is a watercolored ink drawing depicting a fence and tree. Bauer has also signed the painting with his name, the title of the painting and the year.
At the age of sixteen, Bauer moved from Småland to Stockholm to study art. There he also got his first jobs as an illustrator. At the Royal Academy for the Free Arts, he met his future wife Esther Ellqvist, who was also a student at the academy. They married in 1906 in Gränna.
At the age of 36, John died together with his wife Esther Ellqvist-Bauer and their son Bengt ("Putte") when the steamboat Per Brahe sank on Lake Vättern outside Hästholmen.
