The story behind the motif
Poster with motif of Gustav V, King of Sweden from 1907 to 1950, and member of the House of Bernadotte.
During his long reign, Sweden underwent extensive changes and important events occurred both nationally and internationally. Gustav V ruled during both the First and Second World Wars and was a strong proponent of Sweden's neutrality.
At the beginning of his reign, the Borggård crisis of 1914 also occurred, where the king tried to influence defense policy, which led to a political crisis and strengthened parliamentarism. During his time, universal and equal suffrage was introduced for men in 1909 and for women in 1921, marking major steps towards democracy.
