The story behind the motif
Poster with Greta Garbo in the film The Painted Veil (original title: The Painted Veil) in 1934. The film is based on the novel of the same name from 1925 by W. Somerset Maugham.
Greta Garbo is considered to have been one of the biggest film stars of the 1920s and 1930s. Among other things, she has been ranked as the fifth greatest Hollywood actress of all time by the American Film Institute.
Greta Garbo was very shy. She gave no interviews or autographs and never attended any film premieres. No one but the essentials were allowed to see her rehearse or shoot various scenes, sometimes not even the other actors.
If Greta Garbo disagreed with something during a film shoot, she could exclaim " I think I'm going back to Sweden ", to scare the film producers. Over time, she increasingly had a say during filming.
Garbo collected art and had a collection worth millions of dollars.
