The story behind the motif

Poster of the painting Freya by John Bauer from 1916. Freya holds out her long blonde hair and lets it fall at the sides of her. Her torso is bare and she has a light piece of cloth over her legs. Freya was a prominent goddess in Norse mythology who brought love, sexuality and love but also war and death.

Iconic John Bauer is known for his fairytale motifs with goblins and princesses and he has had a great influence on Nordic folklore and storytelling.
