The story behind the motif
Fiskekyrkan, or Feskekörka as the building is also called in Gothenburg in 1946. Feskekörka is a fish and seafood market in central Gothenburg that opened in 1874.
Previously, fish had been sold in the open streets around Gothenburg, which was poorly managed and smelled bad - Feskekörka was built to ensure good quality fish and clean streets. The oldest market place for fish was at Lilla Torget in the 17th century. Fish sales also took place directly from the boats of the archipelago fishermen.
