The story behind the motif

Poster with a painting by the Swedish artist Georg von Rosen from 1864. The name of the work is Entry of Sten Sture the Elder into Stockholm and portrays Sten Sture the Elder - a knight, courtier of Stockholm and regent of Sweden.

In the painting, Von Rosen has depicted how Sten Sture the Elder rides into Stockholm after the victory in the Battle of Brunkeberg in 1471. The victory was often described during the 19th century as the victory of the Swedes over the Danes. In fact, many Swedish soldiers also fought on the side of the union king Christian I.
