In the painting, Von Rosen has depicted how Sten Sture the Elder rides into Stockholm after the victory in the Battle of Brunkeberg in 1471. The victory was often described during the 19th century as the victory of the Swedes over the Danes. In fact, many Swedish soldiers also fought on the side of the union king Christian I.
