The story behind the motif
Poster with a drawing on the transom of the historic ship Kronan written by Francis Sheldon in 1660.
The royal ship Kronan was a Swedish warship and a royal ship. She began construction only 8 years after this drawing was created, entered service in 1672 and was considered one of the largest ships in the world. After only a few years of service and two battles against Danish and Dutch fleets, she sank during the Battle of Öland's southern cape in 1676, where over 800 men perished. Along with the depth came large sums of money in the form of war chests.
The loss of The crown was a difficult blow for Sweden during the Scanian War. She was the fleet's largest, most heavily armed ship and an important symbol of royal power.
