The story behind the motif
The fire eater Rubini extinguished cigarettes, poured burning varnish and spewed fire from his mouth. "The throat can handle most things, but not brandy," he said in an interview.
At the end of June 1917 Circus Strassburger came to Falkenberg. A journalist fell for one of Rubini's performances and came to write: "Rubini, 'the living volcano' as he is called, is a phenomenon that arouses the greatest wonder. It is a fire-eating man who can hold a lighted candle in his mouth without burning himself, drip burning varnish on his tongue, and drink gasoline, which he then sprays out in the form of fire torches. Explain it, whoever can!”
Who was he? Danish circus experts claim it was the Dane Niels Peter Viggo Jensen, a charismatic man who is said to have kept a lion in his garden to keep the tax authorities away. However, Rubini's true identity is highly unclear and remains a mystery.
Artist: Skandinaviska tryckeriet, Sthlm | Created: probably 1917.
