The map is a woodcut from 1539 that was colored in 1572. Olaus Magnus was formally Sweden's last Catholic archbishop. It took him twelve years to complete the map which was a preliminary work to his magnum opus Historia de gentibus septentrionalibus – History of the Nordic Peoples.
