The story behind the motif
Poster with motif of Carl XV's favorite horse Gentleman off the artist John Arsenius.
Carl XV, also known as Karl XV, reigned as King of Sweden and Norway from 1859 until his death in 1872. Gentleman was a stately English Thoroughbred stallion and was considered one of the King's most prized horses. With his elegance and strength, the Gentleman became a symbol of the King's passion for riding and the sport of hunting. Together, the King and the Gentleman spent many hours during the hunting season and at various royal ceremonies, which strengthened their bond and made the Gentleman a well-known figure in the King's life.
The work is a tribute to the Swedish king Carl XV's deep fondness for horses, especially his horse Gentleman. The painting portrays an important part of the history of the Swedish royal family.
