The story behind the motif
Poster with a classic oil painting of the famous ship Calmare Nyckel leaving Gothenburg. The painting was painted in 1922 by the beloved naval artist Jacob Hägg, who was also a Swedish naval officer.
Hägg painted the painting for the Jubilee exhibition in Gothenburg in 1923. The painting hung together with Hägg's other large works in Property of the Maritime Museum in the maritime pavilion. The anniversary exhibition in Gothenburg was arranged to celebrate the city's 300th anniversary.
The ship Calmare Nyckel left Gothenburg in November 1637 bound for North America. The captain was Jan Hindricksen van der Water. On board the ship were Swedes, Finns and Dutch, who were tasked with building up the colony of New Sweden on the west bank of the Delaware River. Calmare Nyckel was a newly built three-masted ship that was bought in Holland in 1629 by the cities of Kalmar and Jönköping.
