The story behind the motif
Advertising poster for the famous Blanch's Café in Kungsträdgården, Stockholm during the 1870s.
Blanch's café brought the pleasures of the continent to Sweden. It was opened in 1868 by Operakällaren's former owner Theodor Blanch and quickly became a success. The cafe was the first in Sweden to have waiters in coats and tables with white tablecloths. Until 1981, visitors could enjoy art, live music, theater and coffee. The café is also known for being the first in Stockholm on March 1, 1879, to have electric light indoors. The cafe advertised "Tonight: Electric Lighting" and the entrance cost one kroner.
