The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Blue Eve by John Bauer from 1918. The painting is considered one of John Bauer's last works as he perished with his family in November of the same year when the steamship Per Brahe sank in an autumn storm on Lake Vättern.

In the picture we see a naked woman kneeling in a diffused landscape of plants in shades of blue. Her gaze is directed towards a black snake on the left. She appears to be picking the fruit hanging from the tree above her. Is it the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden? On the hanging frame belonging to the original painting it says: "Blue princess 1918" and "Eve with the snake". The work is known as Blue Eve and is typical of the monumental art that Bauer focused on between 1915-1918 when he resigned as illustrator for Among Elves and Trolls and wanted to do something new than his classic fairy tale motifs.

John Bauer has had a major impact on Nordic folklore and storytelling and is one of Sweden's most popular artists of all time.
