The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting The Giant Who Slept for Ten Thousand Years by John Bauer from 1912.
The giant Skulbjörn stands on a city street and looks a little puzzled. He has slowly and cautiously approached the city which is completely foreign to him. The giant has just woken up from his 10,000-year sleep and doesn't recognize the area that used to be forest and mountains to him. Above, stars illuminate the dark night sky.
The picture was published together with the fairy tale "Jätten, som sov i tiotusen år" by Einar Rosenborg in the fairy tale collection Fågel blå: en banrnkalender in 1912. John Bauer is known for his fairy tale motifs with trolls and princesses and he has had a great influence on Nordic folklore and storytelling.
