The story behind the motif
Norwegian Crown Prince Olav sails in Sandhamn, Stockholm with his yacht Norna in 1928. The Crown Prince was an elite level sailor and this year visited the Gold Cup sailings in Sandhamn. Shortly afterwards, he himself participated in the Sandhamn regatta.
Olav was born Prince of Denmark, but when his father ascended the throne as King of Norway in 1905, he lost his title and became Crown Prince of Norway instead. Olav took over the throne as King Olav V of Norway in 1957 and married his cousin Princess Märtha of Sweden.
In connection with the German occupation of Norway during the Second World War, the Norwegian royal family and especially the then Crown Prince Olav came to play an important role in the Norwegian people's courage and will to resist.
