The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Mother's Love by John Bauer from 1917. The toddler Humpe sits embraced by his mother in the deep forest. Mother Witch looks at her youngster with deep love and joy in her eyes as she sings him to sleep.

The picture was published with the fairy tale Trollsonen, who had sun eyes and became a forester by Vilhälm Nordin and was published in the fairy tale collection Bland tomtar och troll . John Bauer is known for his fairy tale motifs with trolls and princesses and he has had a great influence on Swedish folklore and storytelling.
