The Breakthrough on the Channel Coast
Hagborg’s fisherman paintings marked his breakthrough in Paris. After a summer on the Normandy coast, his Low Tide in the English Channel was awarded at the 1879 Salon and acquired by the Musée du Luxembourg. When the painting was created two years later, he was already an international name.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the beautiful painting Fisherman with Basket by the Swedish artist August Hagborg from 1881.

Hagborg studied at the Art Academy in Stockholm 1871–1874. During his studies, he became friends with several later prominent painters such as Carl Larsson, Georg Pauli, Ernst Josephson and Anders Zorn. In the fall of 1875, he traveled to Paris, where he initially painted in the costume genre. At the Paris Salon in 1876, he exhibited the newspaper-reading boy Gavroche , which the following year was exhibited at the Academy in Stockholm and bought by Oscar II.
