When Everyday Drinks Became Politics
This was everyday education with a political purpose. The Dominion Scientific Temperance Committee used posters to turn drinking habits into a question of health and temperance. Ontario had already introduced prohibition in 1916, and Toronto Public Library cautiously dates this particular print to the 1920s.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the illustration Safe stimulants published by The Dominion Scientific Temperance Committee during the early 20th century. The organization played a significant role in the scientific temperance movement in Canada during this time. In the illustration, tea, coffee, chocolate, hot water and milk are marketed as safe stimulants.

The committee was founded as part of the wider temperance movement, with the goal of reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption in society. Their purpose was to promote science-based education about the harmful effects of alcohol.

One of the main functions of the Dominion Scientific Temperance Committee was to provide teaching materials and programs for schools and other educational institutions. They developed curricula and educational resources that emphasized the negative health effects of alcohol use. To reinforce their messages, they used a variety of illustrations, which played a central role in their educational and informational campaigns. These illustrations reinforced their scientific and medical arguments.
