Mucha originally designed this lithograph as the Champenois company calendar for 1898. When the image quickly became popular, the magazine La Plume published it as a decorative poster under the title Rêverie. The printer had thus found a business idea that became important to Mucha’s art: affordable wall art for a broad audience.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the poster "F. Champenois" by Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) created in 1898. The painting shows a woman wearing a white dress and a wreath of flowers in her hair. Around her are decorative details such as flowers and lines, typical of the Art Nouveau style.

Alfons Maria Mucha, also known internationally as Alphonse Mucha, was a Czech graphic artist. Mucha lived in Paris during the Art Nouveau period and is best known for his theater posters, such as those for Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous actress in Paris at the time. He created paintings, book illustrations, and designs for carpets, jewelry, and theater sets in the style known as the Mucha style.
