The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Roaring Tiger by the Japanese printmaker Ohara Koson, dated to the period 1900–1945. Koson worked primarily with nature subjects and is especially admired for his colour woodblock prints of birds and animals.
A roaring tiger stands out beneath a slender crescent moon. The animal’s arched body and open jaws lend the image a strong sense of movement, while the dark sky and small moon create a focused, dramatic atmosphere. The combination of a powerful animal motif and a restrained background is characteristic of Koson’s decorative nature compositions.
Artist: Ohara Koson (1877–1945) | Date: 1900–1945.
