A royal park became a city park
The Palace Park in Oslo was laid out alongside the Royal Palace between 1823 and 1860, in keeping with the nineteenth century’s ideal of a naturalistic landscape park. The first palace head gardener, Martin Mortensen, played a key role in the work – the royal setting was from the outset also a carefully tended urban landscape.
