When Music Became Municipal
The photograph belongs to a period when instrumental tuition began opening up to people beyond those with access to private teachers, secondary schools, churches or military bands. During the 1940s, the first municipal music schools were established – the beginning of the Swedish kulturskola that would later make playing an instrument an everyday possibility for many children.

The story behind the motif
