The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting Bear Hunt (1674) by the Swedish artist David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl (1628-1698).
The painting depicts a dramatic scene in which several dogs, equipped with collar-like protection, engage in a fierce battle with a bear in a shadowy, mountainous forest landscape. A hunter can be seen in the upper left corner, watching the action. The dark color palette and intense composition enhance the sense of danger and movement in the hunt.
David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl was a prominent Swedish artist and portrait painter during the 17th century. He became particularly famous as court painter to the Swedish royal family, where his most famous works include portraits of kings such as Charles XI and Charles XII.
