Four sons behind the story
Tomtebobarnen took shape at the Liljendal farm in Bergslagen, where the Beskow family had travelled while Natanael was on leave after overwork. Elsa observed her four sons in snow and moss and used their play as source material. The entire suite of original illustrations was later purchased by the Nationalmuseum, in 1974.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an illustration from one of Sweden's most loved children's books of all time: Tomtebobarnen by Elsa Beskow from 1910.

Elsa Beskow (1874-1953) was a Swedish author and illustrator, known for her storybooks for children that combine text and images in a unique way. She wrote and illustrated over 40 books that have become classics in Swedish children's literature. Beskow's stories are often filled with nature romance and Nordic folklore, making them timeless and beloved by generations.

Santa's children is one of Elsa's most famous books and was published in 1910. The book is about a small family of elves who live in a stump in the forest. Through beautiful illustrations and poetic text, Beskow depicts the adventures of the little elves and their interactions with animals and nature. The book is a tribute to the beauty of nature and has an educational tone that encourages care for the environment.
