One Sheet, Two Studies
The sheet is not merely a one-sided drawing: on the reverse, Egon Schiele also made a graphite study of a reclining nude with raised arms. The Metropolitan Museum therefore catalogues the work as two related studies—charcoal on the front, graphite on the verso.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a line illustration by Egon Schiele. The motif is called Woman Buttoning Her Shoes (1915). The motif shows a beautiful woman in 1910s lingerie tying her heels. The original is at The MET Museum in New York. 

Egon Schiele was an artist from Austria. He is counted together with Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoscha as the most significant figurative artist in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century.
