Schiele’s Final Year
The Metropolitan Museum dates the drawing to 1918, Egon Schiele’s final year. On 31 October that same year, he died of Spanish flu at the age of 28, just three days after his wife Edith, who was six months pregnant. The date makes it a late work from a career abruptly cut short by the pandemic.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a line illustration by Egon Schiele. The motif is called Seated Woman in Corset and Boots and was drawn in 1918. The original is at The MET Museum in New York.

Egon Schiele was an artist from Austria. He is counted together with Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoscha as the most significant figurative artist in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century.

The twisted body shapes and expressive lines that characterize Schiele's paintings show an early form of expressionism. His work is known for its intensity and its sexual overtones.

Illustrator: Egon Schiele | Created: 1918.
