The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful sketch created by Albert Edelfelt in 1935. The sketch depicts a Finnish soldier in traditional uniform, holding a sword.

Albert Edelfelt was a Finnish-Swedish artist. He was one of the first Finnish artists to achieve international fame. In 1895 Edelfelt was elected chairman of the Artists' Guild in Finland and in 1896 he painted Tsar Nicholas II's portrait. Edelfelt's last work was the Inauguration of Åbo Akademi in 1640 for the University of Helsinki's ceremonial hall.
