Turner’s Discreet Signature
Turner did not merely hide his signature at the edge. In the lower right corner, he made the initials JMWT appear as though they had been written directly on a wall—a small, deliberate mark in a painting shown at the Royal Academy as early as 1843.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful painting called The Dogana and Santa Maria della Salute. The painting was created by the British artist William Turner in 1843.

In the picture we see the church building Santa Maria della Salut in Venice, which means "Basilica of Saint Mary of Health". The word Dogana in the name of the painting refers to the triangular area of Venice where the Grand Canal meets the Giudecca Canal and its collection of buildings: Santa Maria della Salute, the P atriarchal Seminary of Venice and the Dogana da Mar.

William Turner is best known for his Romantic landscape paintings , whose style can be said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism. During his lifetime , he traveled around Europe, among other things. First in Switzerland and France, where he studied at the Louvre in Paris. He also visited Italy and above all Venice on several occasions.

Artist: Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) | Created: 1843.
