Chimneys for Security
Although Gripsholm was the first passenger ship in regular transatlantic service to be powered by diesel engines, she had two large funnels. They were not needed for steam boilers, but the shipping company assumed that emigrants associated multiple funnels with strength and safety. The technological shift was thus partly concealed behind a familiar symbol of seafaring.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a picture of the right propeller and rudder of the famous ship M/S Gripsholm. The picture is probably from 1925 and taken at the yard  Armstrong, Whitworth & Co, Ltd in Newcastle in England where the ship was built.

Gripsholm was part of the Swedish shipping company Svenska Amerika Linien and had many famous returning passengers who traveled regularly between Sweden and America. The shipping company's main terminals were in Gothenburg, the so-called Amerikaskjulet at Stigbergskajen, and in New York at Pier 97 in Manhattan. The ship was the world's first diesel-powered passenger ship in Atlantic traffic.
