From beacon to lighthouse
The plan was initially for a beacon – a sea mark without a light. But while construction was under way, Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz’s proposal was changed: an iron basket holding burning coal was placed on the roof. On 1 September 1770, Grönskär was lit as a lighthouse, with Petter Gellman as its first keeper.

The story behind the motif
A beautiful illustration of Grönskär lighthouse, located in Stockholm's archipelago. From a simple wooden hake during the 17th century that was replaced in 1770 into an impressive 23 meter high charcoal lighthouse, designed by Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz. 

After being decommissioned as a navigational aid in 1961, the lighthouse was re-dedicated in 2000 and now stands as a symbol of both our history and future. Grönskär's lighthouse is more than a functional guide – it is a place for reflection, history and a reminder of the strength of nature.
