Painting a Wave
The painting was made in 1881, after Adolf Nordling had taken an unusual route into marine painting. The Royal Academy did not teach the genre, so in 1872 he travelled to Copenhagen to study under C. F. Sørensen—with the aim, as it was put, of “painting a wave”.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the beautiful painting In the Harbour, or the Swedish title: Vid Hamnen . The painting was created in 1884 by Adolf Fredrik Nordling, a Swedish painter.

Nordling studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and with Carl Frederik Sørensen in Copenhagen. Nordling's paintings are characterized by a powerful impressionist style, where he mainly made marine paintings with lively and bright colors.
