When the Minke Whale Got Its Own Name
Whalers long believed that the so-called “sharp-headed finner” was merely a young fin whale. After Charles M. Scammon examined a stranded specimen at Port Townsend in 1870, he described it as a species of its own in his 1874 book – the whale we now call the minke whale.
