Advertising in the midst of a coffee crisis
When the English-language poster was issued in 1931, coffee prices were collapsing after the Depression. In February that year, the Brazilian government decided to buy up withheld coffee stocks, and the surplus was later destroyed to slow the price decline. Jean d’Ylen’s confident message about coffee sustaining the world was therefore advertising amid a national coffee crisis.

The story behind the motif

Poster but a vintage advertisement for Brazilian coffee, illustrated by Jean d'Ylen in 1931.

In the picture we see the text For quality, drink Brazilian coffee – Brazil supplies the world. A red man pours coffee beans onto a blue globe with white stars on it. The symbolism in the picture is Brazil as a leading distributor of coffee in the world. 

This poster is a good example of Art Deco-style that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s, with its graphic and stylized lines.
