There was more technology behind the evening lights than one might imagine: Nybroviken’s floating music pavilion had six arc lamps and its own electricity plant, powered by a steam boiler and steam turbine. Forsström’s 1896 gouache thus captures an amusement venue where winter sport and modern energy technology met in the heart of the city.

The story behind the motif

Skaters on Nybroviken by Edvard Forsström from 1896. Skating got a boost in the middle of the 19th century and became a popular leisure interest for many. In the background you can see Strandvägen and Nybroplan. Edvard studied at the Art Academy in Stockholm, was a cartoonist and illustrator but then got hooked on political satire. He appeared in several newspapers, including Söndags-Nisse.
